Eight Steps To Better Guitar Playing
“How you master your first musical piece, always determine what kind of a musician you are, whether you are average or excellent."That’s what a jazz guitarist told me .
If you are the type of musician who thoroughly and tenaciously practices his first piece very well before learning another musical piece, then you have a better future if you want to make it to the professional level.
People who plays guitar very well amaze me. I am in awe of their proficiency in playing the guitar because as a guitarist myself ( I consider myself a living room guitarist) I know how hard and how much time you have to devote in playing a musical instrument masterfully.
If you take up guitar as a hobby or thinking of making a living out of it , here are a few ideas (I have gathered here and there from hobnobbing with local bands) to inch your way to better guitar playing.
1.Have a goal. If you want to be the next Red Hot Chili Peppers concentrate on songwriting and vocal harmonies, not wasting your time learning all the modes in all positions of the melodic minor scale.
2.Hangout with other musicians. Networking does not only work in the corporate world but in music as well. This is the best way to get contacts and gigs especially if you know lots of musicians and they know you and can recommend you.
3.Practice what you don’t know, not what you know. Master small bits of music first like four to eight notes at a time then connect them to form longer passages. Start out playing new ideas at a slow tempo then gradually work up to speed. It’s much better to play slow and clean than fast and sloppy.
4.Practice with a metronome.
5.Learn as many tunes as possible from start to finish. You can avail yourself to tons of transcription books if you can’t learn tunes off a recording.
6.Always learn a melody on more than one place on the guitar neck.
7.Attend jam sessions, take less than ideal gigs just for the experience of getting in front of people, playing guitar. You have to familiarize yourself in real life musical situations.
8.Play with musicians who are better than you. You can pick up on their years of experience, and learn the tricks of the trade. There’s no faster way to improve and jump up to the next level than to rub elbows with your musical mentors.
